adopting children with HIV:
The most important thing to remember about adopting a child with HIV is that they are like other children you might adopt. It’s important to think carefully about where you want to adopt from, do research on agencies, and prepare for normal (and the unexpected) challenges of adopting and parenting internationally adopted children. Here are some good resources General International Adoption Books: There are many great books. The Complete Book of International Adoption and How to adopt internationally are good books for walking through the international adoption process step by step. There are many other books that are good related to adoptive parenting, domestic (as opposed to international) adoption, and transracial/ transcultural parenting that are great once you start on this journey! Internet resources to start and augment your research: Shaohannah's Hope, Rainbow Kids, U.S. State Department Intercountry Adoption Information, Adoption.com, Creating a Family, Until all have homes, Adoptionblogs.com Internet groups to help with your research: HIV-specific: HIV adoption Yahoo group. Not HIV-specific: International Adoption Resources, Adoption Agency Research, and many, many other Yahoo groups that are specific to the country and/or characteristics of the child you are considering adopting. Magazines: Adoption Today and Adoptive Families. |
